This popular fruit is grown and eaten mainly during the summer when its juice is great to quench the thirst. Water melons are sweet and healthy. These can be grown in various colors apart from the deep pinks ones. What you need is a sunny site which is airy and has a lot of wind blowing through it to set up your water melon patch. Once you have found the site to grow your water melons on you should first prepare the soil. A light fertilizer should be mixed into the soil in this patch.
The next step is to dig holes in the ground to plant the water melon plants in. The distance between each plant should be at least 6 feet and the holes should be at least 2 feet deep, as the water melons need room to grow. The plant should be covered with soil loosely and some fertilizer put on it. The plants can be covered with mulch to retain the moisture in the plants. This also prevents too many weeds from growing. Once the plant starts growing and the flowers appear, this cover should be removed and the plant allowed pollinating and breathing. It is amazing how fast the plant grows and you can pick the fruits that are large enough and wait for the next crop to appear. Not much care is required and the plant thrives well after the initial care of planting it well in soil with fertilizer. The fruit takes at least 3 to 4 weeks to be ready to pick.
Water melons are perennially popular and no matter how large a crop you get, this will never really be too much. So growing your own water melons is always beneficial and there will never be too many to hand out.
