The poppy plant belongs to the “Papaveraceae” or the poppy family. The poppy plant comes in a number of varieties and the flower of the poppy plant – “the Poppy” comes in a range of colours. The poppy flower comes in white, yellow, red , blue to pink and generally the poppy plant has one flower per stem (which is thick). There are also a number of varieties of wild poppies. A single poppy flower is generally made up of 5 to 6 petals and has pollen of different colours in the centre depending on the species to which they belong.
The poppy flower as per many customs and in different cultures symbolises different things. Poppy is usually known to be symbolizing sleep and death. The opium poppy or Papaver somniferum has been defamed by many, as its produce –opium- has been put to wrong use. The seeds of the poppy plant is used extensively in Indian cuisine.
The poppy plant is generally observed to be healthy by nature and does not require too much of attention and care. For healthy plants , well-drained soil with good sunlight is the basic requirement. They need very less care and do not require manure or fertilizer either. The poppy plant usually ensures its own multiplication by spreading its seeds all around taking help from the sources of nature. A totally hassle –free plant that is very easy to grow and look after.
