Moss adds to the beauty of any garden and has many uses in landscaping. Moss sticks which are plastic or metal rods with clumps of moss growing on them, are used for growing creepers around them and placing them in the garden or even on a terrace garden. Exotic flowers like the orchids grow on moss and you can see these beautiful flowers on the bark of trees in forests, growing wild and unattended.
Many people would like to grow their own moss to use this as a decorative infrastructure in their landscaping. This can be done by collecting moss from various places where it is found and making it grow in your own garden. There is a belief that moss growing on rocks or any form of concrete will only grow on rocks, so if you want to cover rocks with moss then collect it from rocky surfaces. Similarly if you want it to grow on wood you should collect it from places where it grows on wood. After collecting the moss, super glue should be used to stick it to the surface and then spray it frequently with buttermilk to give it a good growth.
The soil can be prepared to make moss grow well. The soil should be improved for the growth of moss with pH5.0-5.5 added to it. To encourage good growth and spreading of moss, sulfur which can be dampened should be used. pH should be added damp and this encourages the growth of moss. The area should be kept damp with a sprinkler as watering it down will wash away the spores of the moss.
If you want to start growing your moss from scratch and do not have any of it growing in the area that has to be covered with moss this is what you do. Put a sufficient quantity of moss, buttermilk and sugar into a blender and mix it until the moss is broken down into a soupy kind of mix. Spread this mixture on the area where you want the moss to grow and keep it moist. You will get a luxuriant growth of moss in a few days time.
