The carnation plant , scientifically known as “Dianthus Caryophyllus” belongs to the “Caryophyllaceae” family. It is commonly known as “carnation “, “divine flower” or “clove pink” and is found in a number of colours(sometimes also found in a mixture of more than one colour).
Native to the Eurasia region , the carnation is known to grow to a height ranging from 2” to that of 3 feet. The carnation is the national flower of Spain.
The carnation gets its name from the word “coronation” as it was a flower which formed a part of the Greek ceremonial crowns. Carnations symbolise the feeling of “love” , “admiration” and “gratitude”. Each colour of carnation is believed to denote a specific emotion .
The flowering season of the carnation is observed to be in the early winters. The carnations are extensively used as cut flowers and form a vital part of elaborate bouquets for all occasions. If looked after with proper care, the flower of the carnation plant would last anywhere from 15 days to a month.
The carnation plant for growing and providing good healthy blooms requires fertile, alkaline soil that is well drained. The carnation plant needs to be kept moist and needs a few hours of good sunlight each day. The spacing between the individual plants must be about 12 to 18 inches and the plants must be sprayed with a liquid fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks for best results and getting healthy plants that bear lovely flowers.
