Now that you have decided to grow potatoes in your own land or garden then you must have proper knowledge on how to grow them. Potatoes grow in two varieties namely; Earlies and the Maincrop. The Earlies will grow well in summer while the Maincrop will let you grow potatoes in the winter months. So it is better to grow these two types in their approved growing seasons. The best thing is that potatoes don’t needs any special type of soil to grow. So whatever type of soil you have in your garden or your land you can grow potatoes there. But you have to maintain several conditions. Always choose a portion of the land which is exposed to sunlight and has less shade. Do not let frost to accumulate if the place regularly faces snowfall. Before planting potatoes use fertilizer in the ground. An acidic soil condition is a bit favorable for the growth of potatoes.
Dig the soil where you want to grow potato tubers. Apply sufficient amount of water and manure to the soil to help the potatoes grow. Allow a few weeks for the plant to grow. Within days you will perceive that shoots grows from the eyes of potatoes. You should apply insecticides if you find insects and pests crawling around your crop. They may harm the potatoes. You must allow up to 10 to 12 weeks or more for the potatoes to grow. After that you can dig them out and find whether they are mature enough to be cooked. After you find that the potatoes have grown, start the harvesting process. Carefully dig and loosen the soil so that you can take out your potatoes. After taking them out store them in bags and away from frost otherwise they will be rotten. Maintain these guidelines and your will be able to grow this vegetable.
