How to grow peanuts
Peanuts are members of the "pea" family”. Peanuts are the native crop of South and they can be grown easily. Peanuts need the sandy soil which should be light and a long time to grow. They are not meant for clay soils. The pegs have a problem pushing through the soil. It needs 130 to 140 days to grow. They can be grown in a garden. Peanuts can be planted out of doors when there is absolutely no frost. They need to be sowed one or more inches deep in to the soil. 6-7 inches space between the seeds is required and the rows should be 3 feet apart.
If it is needed to shorten their growing season then the plants needs to be sowed indoors, 2 to 4 weeks before in that area there was the last frost. To minimize the transplanting shock peat pots are to be used. It is not necessary to buy the peanuts seeds from a local seed store. Raw peanuts can be bought from grocers. Peanuts would grow well in sandy soil with munificent manure and compost and ample of drainage. Watering everyday is required for the soil to be kept moist as there is drying out of the sandy soil, but over-watering is harmful.
The pegs or pods will grow from a stem which pushes into the soil after bending. In case the soil is too firm, then a mulch and sand to a certain inches is to be added on top of the soil. Harvesting of peanuts is to be done after the first frost. The plant is to be uprooted and left to dry. After that the shells of the peanuts are pulled out and roasting them can make an enjoyable snack.
