Well if you are able to achieve the specific conditions for growing orchids then you can easily grow them at home. Basically orchids require a humid weather condition to grow. So you have to create such a condition if you reside in a cold climatic region. A temperature of 50˚-65˚F is ideal for growing orchids. Maintain at least 50% humidity for growing orchids. So while selecting the soil for the growth of the orchids you need to consult an expert. You can also purchase soil (ideal for orchids) from botanical stores. Use adequate fertilizers for the soil but make sure they are water soluble. Apply water in the soil but do not let the water to stand or accumulate in the pot which you are using for growing orchids. Keep the soil moist so that these orchids get their adequate water requirement from the moist soil. Be sure to use water which is a little warm.
Sunlight is an essential factor when you are concerned with the orchids to grow properly. Determine the type of orchids and then expose them to sunlight. However many orchids die on being exposed to direct sunlight, so keep a note of this fact. This is because different types of orchids have different sunlight requirements. You can also use artificial lights if your place lacks sunlight. Use red and blue fluorescent light bulbs and expose them to the orchids. It will help in the ripening and maturing process of the orchids. One more fact which has to be kept in mind is that keeping your orchids away from the insects and pests. Use special pesticides for that in correct amounts to save your orchids.
