However the basics are mostly the same and the soil has to be prepared carefully before planting the onion seeds. Once the soil has been prepared the seeds can be sown in rows far apart, and covered with the prepared soil lightly and watered with a spray. Watering should be gentle and not with a heavy flow. The seeds take around three weeks to germinate. Once the seedlings grow to about a few inches, plant them further apart and ensure that they are well watered now.

For those who have been growing onions regularly this becomes an easy task for them and they get to know exactly what the soil should be like. However, even these experts had to learn about all this first. The onion seeds for the main crop should be prepared in autumn and the ground should settle down so that the frost is allowed to break down the clods of soil. A lot of manure or lime in case the soil is acidic should be folded into the soil. For onions the pH level should be around 6 or 7. To find out the pH level of your soil you can buy yourself a testing kit.

The soil should be raked to a tilt that is fine, on a dry day before sowing the seeds, and along with this the fertilizer should be mixed into the soil. Once you have raked the soil tread on it as onions grow better in firmer soil. If the soil is too wet it will start clinging to your shoes and this means you have to wait a little longer before planting the seeds.
