How to grow mushrooms

Why buy those expensive mushrooms from the super market when you can easily grow your own in your very own back yard!

Home gardeners in China have been growing mushrooms for more than 1,000 years. Growing mushrooms at home is easy and fun, and saves a lot of money too. The best part about growing mushrooms is that you hardly have to do anything other than place the growing log in a dark, damp corner and being the fungus that the mushrooms are, they will spring up in no time.

When hardwood is imbued with mycelium, it makes the best element for the preparation of a mushroom log. Since the mushrooms are actually spawned, the body of fungus that does the trick has often been referred to as spawn. Once the mushroom log is received by the customer, from the dealer who generally ships it, the customer must soak it in water for about 24 hours and then place the log undisturbed in a dark and damp corner of the house. The place should be at room temperature for best results, although a little warmer than the normal climate is also conducive in most cases.

It generally takes a time of seven days for the mushrooms to get ready for harvesting. It is interesting to note that as soon as the mycelium is retained by the log it can be used over and over again for the same purpose with the same fertility. A mushroom log can easily be procured and makes for a great way to show the kids how to grow the delectable fungi.

If you want to grow a more unusual type of mushroom then you can make use of a cake and a mushroom box.

If you wish to cultivate mushrooms on a larger scale than just in your back yard, then you will have to start by making your own cake substrate. It is easy to make using straw or saw dust.
