Growing grapes may not be as easy as it may look to a lot of people, not only the suitable conditions for its growth but the type of grapes to be grown can give anyone a tough time. Where one may prefer wine, the others may resort to table or slip skin.
A few things to be kept in mind while growing grapes are; firstly the trellis system, which is a complex structure of wires and stakes that, holds the vine intact. The grape varieties that have a rampant growth will always need ample support. Before we even start thinking about our crop, the knowledge of the vine structure is the most important thing which should not be left unattended as the quality of the fruit depends upon the vine structure to a considerable extent. A wire cutter along with an ordinary shovel and a pair gloves are some more requirements.
Spring or the summer season is the best time when one can grow the sweetest of the grapes. To begin with one must approach the local nursery to find out what type of grapes would be the best to grow considering the various environmental factors. The plant must be strategically placed in the area of full sun. The reason for this is that a fruit that is in its developing stages requires ample heat. The most suitable soil form is loamy, loose and fast draining at the same time. Since the roots of grapes go very deep, it is required on ones’ part to amend the soil as deep as possible. A depth of 24-36 inches is ideal to add organic compost.
As the grapevine gets dormant it must be pruned. It is interesting to know that the fruit grows not on the new but the old branches that had already grown firm in the previous season.
